Wedding Gowns

The decision to use a traditional photographer or photojournalist is strictly one of preference. Both do excellent jobs and your choice depends on the type of pictures that you prefer. Make sure that you discuss the type of pictures that you want with the photographer before entering into a contract. Also get references and find out how intrusive the photographer will be during the wedding.

1. Verify schedule

2. Check prices and pay plans

3. Discuss type of pictures (Classic or Photojournalist)

4. Look at sample pictures

5. Discuss Digital vs Film

6. Who owns the copyright?

7. Will you get a CD?

8. Get a letter releasing rights to print.

9. If required, verify photographer travel costs.

One of the key decisions to be made is the selection of a photojournalist or studio photographer for the wedding pictures.

Basically, the traditional or classic wedding photographer will pose the subjects for many of the wedding  pictures. One advantage of this is that you will get all the people that you desire in the pictures, everyone should be smiling, and positioned in a pre-determined location. The pictures are of very high quality and meet the requirements of the wedding couple and photographer. The classic photographer is very experienced and good at setting up an excellent portrait type picture. The disadvantages are that the photographs can sometimes look too formal, they are not unique and may look similar to other weddings. Finally, they are time consuming. Have you ever waited at a reception while the food is getting cold and the wedding party is late due to the photo session.

A photojournalist is trained to take action photos of an event. Therefore, a pure photojournalist does not pose the subjects for the photos, but instead takes pictures spontaneously. The procedure is sometimes referred to as a documentary style using a natural background and does involve some staged pictures. The advantages of photojournalists are that their pictures involve more action photos. They are trained and experienced in taking photos of spur-of-the moment events. They don’t take up a lot time setting up their subjects for photo shots.  One disadvantage of a pure photojournalist is that they may not get that picture of family and wedding party together that the wedding couple or family wants. However many photojournalists will take any posed pictures that you specify. Be sure to ask the photojournalist when contracting for the pictures. Another disadvantage is that some (not all) work for newspapers or other businesses may not be as available for wedding assignments.
